On-site bioremediation of contaminated soil by bio-venting

Implementation of environmental policy in urban planning: soil decontamination using bio-venting technique in Evosmos, Thessaloniki GREECE An environmental soil and groundwater investigation took place in the frame of an EC program (LIFE97 ENV/GR/000380) within an extended area of the municipality of Evosmos Thessaloniki. The investigation included a multilevel sampling of the subsoil, soil-gas and groundwater. The main soil contaminants were petroleum hydrocarbons. Based on these results the design and the implementation of the appropriate decontamination for the soil took place. The most appropriate decontamination measures for the indicated soil contamination proved to be the in-situ and on-site treatment of the soil with an enhanced bioremediation method. The applied technique of Bio-Venting was proved to be very effective. Contaminants in the soil: Hydrocarbons Total amount of the contaminated soil: 2.000 m³
