Niger Delta Contamination Investigation
INTERGEO was asked to look at the widespread contamination of the soil and especially of the groundwater at the area of the Niger River delta. Due to the high number of oil drilling platforms off the coast and the oft-occurring spills, the landscape is subject to (re) contamination due to tidal activity a number of times throughout the year.
INTERGEO went on a site visit and took samples to be analysed in its chemical laboratory in Budapest, Hungary. Using a variety of methods it was discovered that with the correct remediation techniques the total content of mineral oils could be reduced by 50% and the mineral oil content of the leachate could be reduced by 100%.
Our services:
INTERGEO reported the results to the Department of Petroleum Resources, submitted an initial remediation plan and spoke about the environmental situation and potential remediation methods at the 2nd Niger Delta Conference in May of 2014. The project was postponed (political instability, Ebola epidemic).
